We finally managed to get our car packed and get on our way to Winter Quarters. Jill came and spent a day with us loading the car. I know she had a magic wand because we actually got everything into the car. 
We were fortunate enough to have Steve and Mary and our darling DC grands come to see us. So glad they made it before we left. They also came to see Mary’s dad, Larry Wilson, be sustained to the Second Quorum of Seventy at General Conference. We are so pleased for Larry—he is a wonderful man. .
Right after the MTC, Fred gave us a scare when he started having a severe shortness of breath that wouldn’t go away. We ended up at the doctor and spent three days with all kinds of tests to prove it wasn’t heart failure, cancer, or worse. They even took two liters of fluid off his lung. The final decision was a rare type of pneumonia. Our good friend and home teachee, Dr. Kent Meredith, doctored him and sent us off to serve the Lord.
We arrived in Winter Quarters to be welcomed by my brother John and his wife Barbara to their lovely home right next to the Trail Center. Two charming elders, Elder Sherwood and Elder Plaughman magically showed up in time to unload our things into our apartment at 3111 Tucker Street #30. It may have taken Jill and me all day to load the car, but they had it unloaded in twenty minutes. Thank goodness for willing and helpful elders!!
After a great night’s rest at the Watson’s, we had our first introduction to the people we will spend the next year with. It was the weekly Training Meeting and we were introduced to the 27 sisters who are in our area—18 of whom are currently assigned to the center, rotating with the other nine. We met the office couples and Sister Thompson who helped arrange our housing over the phone. We met all the other Senior Couples, some local service missionaries and four other couples called to serve here as are we.
The Mission President and his wife, President and Sister Kunz made us feel welcome and even brought us a special treat—Panera Bakery Cinnamon bagels. 
We were fortunate enough to arrive at the right time to meet everyone. Within four days we had four different meetings with the Senior Couples. Not only did we have our regular Saturday training meeting but we had Saturday Night Senior Sisters Dinner while the men were in Priesthood Meeting with ice cream after, but Monday night Senior Couples Dinner and a Tuesday Morning Inservice from SLC. We felt we had really gotten acquainted.
The Davis’ have been our trainers all week and have shadowed us in all our assignments. They have been great teachers. We work six hour shifts during the summer. Some of the time we are at the Train Center where we are mostly welcomers as the young sisters do most of the tours. But at the Kanesville Tabernacle we do the tours. Kanesville is fun for us because we have a wonderful statue of Heber C Kimball with his friend and cohort Brigham Young along with Willard Richards who were sustained as the second First Presidency in the Church in December 1847 at the Kanesville Tabernacle.
We are fortunate to have a very nice apartment. It is about a block from the Center. We have two bedrooms, a nice living room with respectable furniture, and Senior Couples for neighbors. We finally have the internet and life is good!
